The Route

The Diabetes UK Great North Walk will feature a different path from last year’s event.

Though the event will be centred on Herrington Country Park, the start and finish area will be in a different location to the one used in 2008.

It means walkers will experience a new opening loop around the former colliery site, which has been transformed into a wonderful country park with thousands of mature and specially planted trees.

The route will then cross Chester Road, where improved traffic management arrangements will be in place, and head up to Penshaw Monument.

From the fantastic vantage point of Penshaw Monument and its sweeping views of both the lower Wear and Tyne vallies, the route descends to the south bank of the River Wear before turning left towards Fatfield and then back to Penshaw.

The final stretch will take walkers back to the delights of Herrington Country Park.
